Gerdau is currently seeking a Safety Specialist for our Charlotte, NC mill.
This position is responsible for assisting with loss prevention and control systems, as they relate to health and safety, and providing technical support for improvement efforts. The Safety Specialist will assist management with the development and implementation of a safety management system aimed at preventing and controlling losses.
The Safety Specialist reports directly to the Safety Manager. Under general direction, assist with the development, identification, and implementation of management tools to support the safety management system that is congruent with performance expectations. Assist with the implementation of a communication plan for health and safety issues, including all safety training programs at the location.
The incumbent will participate in the supporting the Gerdau Business System (GBS) as it relates to health and safety. The primary focus of the position will be to support the implementation and administration of the safety management system.
The incumbent actively participates in accident prevention activities to include inspections, observations, and incident investigations. This position acts in an advisory capacity to management and may serve as a liaison with governmental agencies as necessary.
The incumbent should possess a bachelors degree in safety, industrial hygiene, engineering, or other appropriate technical discipline and 2 to 5 years safety experience (manufacturing environment preferred). This position requires the ability to solve problems, influence, and communicate ideas to effect change in behaviors. Excellent communication skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications are required. Responsible for staying abreast of new technologies and current trends to make recommendations that help improve and refine the safety process.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Assist management with the development and implementation of the safety management system.
- Provide effective professional health and safety support to improve the industrial health and safety of all employees.
- Assist with the identification of a measurement system to evaluate the effectiveness of the safety management system.
- Support and administer the communication system for health and safety issues throughout the location.
- Provide support for routine management practices for health and safety programs.

Responsible for providing effective professional safety leadership to improve the industrial health and safety of all location employees. Responsible for implementation and maintenance of environmental compliance activities and other federally regulated activities.
This position reports directly to the Works Manager along with the Rolling Mill General Supervisor, Rolling Mill Maintenance General Supervisor, Finishing General Supervisor, QC Metallurgist, Plant Engineer, Management Systems Coordinator, Human Resources Manager and Mill Accountant.
This position is responsible for assessing current loss prevention and control efforts (in the area of safety and health) and making recommendations to management for improvement. The incumbent will assist management with the strategic development and implementation of a management accountability system aimed at preventing and controlling losses by identifying and developing role definitions for all levels of the organization; identifying, deliver training, and developing/implement communication systems to effectively communicate safety and health issues.
The incumbent evaluates risks and develops guidelines for roles, measurements, and rewards for the management system in the areas of employee safety (behaviors, conditions that lead to accidents); industrial hygiene (noise, lead exposure, hazard communication, etc.); property protection (fire suppression systems, inspection procedures, etc.); post Injury and General Claims Management (all lines); OSHA compliance (lockout/tagout, confined space entry, fall protection, OSHA record keeping, etc.); contractors; and job safety analysis.
This position provides guidance and assistance to location management with regards to pollution control, hazardous waste and environmental issues and to ensure on going compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
The Safety & Environmental Manager collects samples and data required for various environmental permits and licenses. In addition, the incumbent is also responsible for the preparation and timely filing of all federal, state and local environmental reports.
The Safety & Environmental Manager obtains and provides direction, guidance, and assistance as required to assure the most efficient and effective use of resources required for remediation activities and for short and long term environmental compliance in line with company policy and under the general direction of the Works Manager. Due to close contact with operating management and personnel, and federal, state and local regulatory agencies, the position requires the ability to effectively communicate with a variety of personalities and interests.
The major challenge of this position is in anticipating and providing compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
Requirements:
Qualifications for this position include specific knowledge of federal, state and local environmental and safety regulations and a familiarity with steel mill or similar heavy industrial operations. The candidate should possess a bachelor’s degree in safety, industrial hygiene, environmental engineering, or other appropriate technical discipline and 5-7 years’ safety and/or environmental management experience, or a master’s degree in safety, environmental engineering, or other appropriate technical discipline and 3-5 years’ safety and/or environmental management experience. Also desirable are 3-5 years’ facilitation experience in problem solving, communication, quality improvement and other typical facilitation experience.

BASIC FUNCTION:

- Proven ability to create training materials and deliver presentations to diverse groups of employees (hourly, management, etc.)
- Incumbent must be a Champion of Safety.

- Ensures thorough investigations of accidents and OSHA complaints are conducted and proper courses of action are taken to resolve.
- Develops, and revises departmental SOP’s to enhance quality, quantity, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
- Maintains records necessary for the preparation and distribution of accurate and timely reports. Collects, analyzes and disseminates Safety and Loss Prevention data to Corporate Executives, fellow managers, and the workforce.
- Identifies all OSHA and EPA at risk conditions to plant management in order to abate..
- Manages hazardous waste disposal program. This includes maintaining manifests and documentation required to be in compliance with federal and state law and investigating and incorporating waste minimization procedures to reduce hazardous waste disposal .
- Administers Worker’s Compensation policies and procedures in their entirety. This includes functions from accident reporting and investigation, through maintenance and closure of cases.
- Creates and drives in conjunction with plant management the effective execution of a safety culture across the facility
- Provides leadership in developing and implementing an effective Safety Management Program, including education, training, risk reduction and auditing practices
- Plans, develops and implements with plant management policies & practices designed to improve safety awareness and compliance
- Oversees site security, including managing the relationship with Security Guard employment agency.
- Performs the responsibilities of the Fleet Safety Supervisor for this location. This includes reviewing drivers’ licenses and testing.
- Strives to continuously build knowledge and skills. Stays current with developments within the safety and loss prevention field and shares expertise with others. Ensures compliance with all state and federal safety standards.

We are searching for a passionate and results-oriented individual to join us as MRO Purchasing and Compliance Specialist. This position will be based in our Conover, NC corporate office and will report to the Director, Purchasing and Logistics.
POSITION SUMMARY
Manage day to day activities related to spend and the supply base for MRO items, Capital Expenditures, and Contracted Services. Identify and help implement process improvements and cost reduction initiatives. Support the development and implementation of strategic, operational and capital plans of the company. Ensure compliance of all Safety and Regulatory programs both internally and externally on behalf of the company.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
- Standardize the purchase of MRP goods and services, developing new sources when needed, and consolidating purchases to the extent possible to recognize economies of scale.
- Review vendor proposals and assist with negotiating terms and conditions within the contract (i.e. delivery terms, payment terms, delivery schedules, availability, complaint settlement, etc.) for optimal benefit to the company.
- Evaluate performance of vendors and perform RFQ process for vendor selection, as needed
- Ensure that all purchases conform to company standards for safety, OSHA regulations, environmental compliance, EEOC compliance, Federal Trade Practices and other applicable legislation. This includes ensuring that the company has current certificates of Insurance liability for all contractors and freight carriers.
- Ascertain all MRO Technical Specifications and MSDS information; record and track related information on the company public drive
- Audit company safety programs and activities (including training and recordkeeping) to ensure company programs meet regulatory standards.
- Develop programs (including training sessions, documentation templates and recordkeeping practices) for all required safety-related initiatives. Create project plans and timelines for safety program implementation. Work through Plant Managers and local HR staff to ensure safety programs executed in accordance with company plan.
- Perform other duties as requested.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree (BA) in a business related area and a minimum of five years’ experience in a purchasing and logistics role, preferably in a high-volume manufacturing environment, or equivalent background and experience.
- Demonstrated strong administrative and project management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to research and analyze different types of data and information.
- Demonstrated ability to engage in effective and detailed problem analysis and problem solving.
- Strong organization, prioritization, communication (including memos, electronic communications, presentations, etc.), listening and influencing skills.
- Must contribute to organizational effectiveness and bring structure to unstructured situations, balancing multiple priorities within tight timeframes
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and ERP applications (e.g., MS Dynamics GP-10, MFG-PRO) and production modules.
- Experience with diverse procurement vendor negotiations is preferred

Manage activities of the City’s comprehensive Risk Management program including insured and self insured programs. Develop risk mitigation plans and programs, policies and procedures, and internal controls. Provide guidance/assistance to departments in identifying, evaluating, understanding, managing, and communicating significant risks. Develop, recommend, monitor, and administer the annual Risk budget. Maintain the Risk Management internal service fund. Direct claims management for property, casualty, and worker’s compensation programs. Compile and maintain records, statistical reports, and activities. Specific experience in a municipal setting is preferred. A four-year Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in business, insurance, or risk management is required. POSITION OVERVIEW
Supervises a staff of field loss control employees as it relates to workloads, assignment surveys, written surveys, corresponding, and general direction. Provide technical and analytical assistance to major accounts, Agency Operations, agents, and loss control field staff. Act as a consultant on major and complex risks. Identify needs for training, arrange, and/or provide training.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain a consultant workload on large accounts of a complex nature and/or those that have a significant importance to the Company.
- Perform field evaluations on consultants and provide field training where required and to the extent to bring the consultant to a high level of performance within the standards of the loss control department.
- Attend meetings with agents, Agency Operations personnel, and insurers in support of the Company?s marketing strategies.
- Monitor field activity and provide direction and control in the areas of productivity and quality work both in the field and on written work.
- Perform all personnel administration activity for department including salary administration, performance management, hiring, timekeeping, discipline, training, and employee communications, according to corporate policy and procedure guidelines.
- Other activities as assigned by management.
REQUIREMENTS:
Successful candidates will have 5 to 10 years of loss control experience in the insurance industry. The ability to coach and motivate a team of remote Loss Control Consultants. Strong communication skills, the ability to build and maintain strong relationships. Candidates must have management experience, preferably in the insurance industry. Frequent travel inside North Carolina and Georgia to Loss Control Consultants? location is required. Must have Bachelor degree. ASP or CSP preferred.
